We are the Northern Beaches’ hot water repair and replacement specialists. Below are recent projects we’ve completed for Northern Beaches clients to ensure they continue to enjoy trouble-free hot water.
Replace a customer’s old Rheem electric water heater with a new instantaneous gas hot water system
We received a call from a Balgowlah customer who was continually running out of hot water. As the children became teenagers, they started taking longer showers and the demands on their old water heater grew. An electric hot water system replacement service was necessary.
Once onsite at the customer’s Northern Beaches home, we found an old Rheem electric water heater (the customer had certainly got their money’s worth out of this hard-working water heater).
We discussed hot water system replacement options with the customer and they chose to remove the old electric tank and replace it with a new instant gas hot water system. One of the main benefits of instantaneous gas water heaters is you never run out of hot water because it’s heated by an element as it’s used.
The customers had been happy with the old Rheem electric water heater so opted for a new Rheem Metro gas continuous flow hot water system (model: 876T26).
Switching from electric to gas hot water
- First, we drained and disconnected the old electric water heater. We took this away for recycling.
- Next, we discussed where the customer wanted the new gas water heater installed. Because instant hot water heaters don’t have need a storage tank, we were able to install it discretely on a wall closest to the kitchen, laundry and bathroom. This will improve the time it takes for the hot water to reach the hot water taps, reducing water waste and waiting times.
- As licensed plumbers and gas fitters, we are able to undertake all the work necessary to connect a customer to a new gas hot water system. We do not have to outsource to other tradespeople. This saves the customer considerable expense and makes the process quicker so our customers are back enjoying trouble free hot water quickly. We then connected the cold water inlet and hot water outlet pipes.
- After completing the installation, we undertake a series of tests to ensure the hot water system is operating correctly. These include testing the water pressure, and ensuring there are no gas leaks. Finally, the system is ignited and the temperature settings are adjusted according to the manufacturer’s specifications and Australian standards.
- We then cleaned up the site, removed any rubbish, and left the customers to enjoy many long showers without worrying they would run out of hot water.
Repair a customer’s water heater who was experiencing unreliable hot water supply problems.
A customer in Avalon reached out to us after experiencing issues with their hot water supply. During showers, they would frequently get a sudden blast of cold water, and it was taking longer for hot water to reach the taps.
When your hot water supply becomes inconsistent, it’s usually an indication that your water heater requires servicing or repair. Common signs to look out for include:
- Temperature fluctuations between hot and cold water.
- Delays in hot water reaching your taps.
- Water being too hot or too cold, even after adjusting the settings.
What causes unreliable hot water?
In many cases, hot water inconsistencies are caused by a faulty tempering valve. For our Northern Beaches customer, we scheduled a visit that same day to investigate and resolve the issue, ensuring they could return to having a reliable hot water supply.
Upon arriving at the customer’s Northern Beaches home, we confirmed that the tempering valve on their Rheem Stellar gas hot water heater was indeed faulty. Fortunately, our service trucks are equipped with a wide range of replacement parts, including tempering valves for numerous models. Within an hour, we had removed the defective valve and installed a new one.
While on-site, we conducted a thorough diagnostic check of other critical components in the water heater. Everything was functioning as it should, so no additional maintenance was necessary.
Thanks to the new tempering valve, the customer can now enjoy uninterrupted hot showers. The valve not only enhances safety by reducing the risk of scalding but also improves the system’s efficiency, helping hot water reach the taps faster. This efficiency reduces water waste and helps lower energy bills for the household.
Relocate a hot water system from inside to outside.
A customer in Elanora Heights requested that we move their hot water system from their laundry to an unused area in the garden, next to their air conditioning unit. Within a few hours, their water heater was relocated, allowing them to reorganise their laundry space without losing access to hot water.
The benefits of moving a hot water system outside
Relocating a water heater can be a great way to maximise space, as it was for this customer. Their existing Rheem electric water heater was taking up valuable room in a small laundry. By moving it outdoors, they freed up space for additional storage.
Since the water heater was in good working order, we drained it, disconnected the system, and reinstalled it in the garden. Fortunately, the customer’s Rheem unit was designed for both indoor and outdoor use, making the relocation straightforward.
Relocating the water heater came with several immediate and long-term benefits for the customer:
- More Space: The freed-up laundry space made the room more functional and visually appealing.
- Better Organisation: With the water heater gone, the customer was able to reorganise the laundry and add much-needed storage.
- Increased Safety: Moving the heater outside reduces the risk of water damage in the event of a leak or system failure.
- Improved Efficiency: By adding insulation, the water heater operates efficiently even outdoors, reducing energy consumption.
- Easier Maintenance: The outdoor setup simplifies access for maintenance and repairs.
- Potential Property Value Boost: The increased space and improved laundry organisation could enhance the home’s value, making it more attractive to future buyers.
Things to consider when moving a water heater
Relocating a hot water system requires careful planning, including:
- Location: Choosing a convenient, safe spot outdoors, ensuring the water heater is suitable for external installation.
- Plumbing: Making sure water supply and drainage connections are properly extended to the new location.
- Electrical: Verifying that the electrical setup complies with safety standards.
- Insulation: Ensuring the water heater is insulated to protect it from the elements, maintaining its efficiency.
The hot water system relocation process
Here’s an overview of how we relocate a hot water system:
- Preparation: We begin by draining the water heater to make it easier to move.
- Disconnecting: Next, we safely disconnect the plumbing and electrical connections from the old location.
- Setting Up the New Location: We prepare a stable, level surface for the heater outside, ensuring proper drainage and modifying plumbing and electrical connections as needed.
- Reconnection: The system is then reconnected, and insulation is added to protect the heater from the weather.
- Testing: After everything is in place, we restore power and test the heater to confirm that it’s functioning properly.
Rheem solar hot water system installation. Replace broken Solahart solar system.
A Northern Beaches customer reached out to us after their old Solahart rooftop system stopped producing hot water. Installed years ago when the apartment complex was built, the system had finally reached the end of its life. It was time for a new solar hot water system.
John arrived at the property later that day and began by inspecting the rooftop to determine if the existing Solahart system could be repaired. Repairing the system is always our first approach as it’s typically the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
Upon inspection, John found that the storage tank and key components of the Solahart system were beyond repair. As with many older systems, replacement parts were no longer available. The only option was to install a new solar hot water system.
After discussing options with the customer, they decided to go with a Rheem Hiline solar hot water system featuring a 300-litre stainless steel storage tank (model: 52L300). This system comes in a variety of Colorbond colours, including Silver Grey, Woodland Grey, Headland, and Night Sky. The customer chose Night Sky for their installation.
The solar hot water installation process
Installing a solar hot water system involves several key steps, which we follow to ensure a seamless and efficient process.
- Assessment and Planning : The first step is to assess the current hot water system, the roof structure, and the customer’s hot water usage. With this information, we recommend the most suitable solar hot water system. Proper planning ensures the installation goes smoothly and meets the customer’s needs.
- Removal of the Old System : Once the assessment is complete, we safely disconnect and remove the old hot water system. Having completed thousands of these removals, our team works quickly and efficiently to ensure minimal disruption.
- Installing the New Rheem Solar Hot Water System : We keep a variety of Rheem solar hot water systems in stock, so customers don’t have to wait for orders. With specially designed equipment, we can safely lift heavy rooftop systems into place without needing to hire additional costly machinery. We carefully select the optimal location for the new system, ensuring it’s positioned for maximum exposure to sunlight and secured to withstand all weather conditions. Once in place, we connect it to the necessary water and power supplies, often adding a gas or electric backup for cloudy days.
- Testing and Commissioning : After the installation is complete, we thoroughly test the system to ensure everything is functioning correctly. This includes checking for leaks, verifying the water temperature, and ensuring the solar collectors are operating at peak performance.
