Fast and cost-effective fixes for a common water heater leak.

A leaking water heater is one of the most common problems homeowners face, but the good news is that it’s often a simple and affordable fix. In many cases, the culprit is a faulty Temperature and Pressure Relief (TPR) valve — a small but vital component that protects your hot water system.

Below, we share two real-life repair examples that show how quick action can restore your system’s efficiency and extend its lifespan.

Leaking Rheem water heater repair – Manly Vale

We recently serviced a Rheem gas hot water system for a customer in Manly Vale that had been running reliably since 1996. That’s almost three decades of continuous use!

This long service life was due not only to Rheem’s reputation for building durable, Australian-made products but also to the customer’s diligence in keeping up with regular servicing.

The cause of the water heater leak

On inspection, we found the TPR valve was leaking excessively. Over time, this valve wears out, especially in older systems, and must be replaced to ensure the tank remains safe and efficient.

Repairing the leak

We replaced the faulty TPR valve and carried out a full service to keep the system running smoothly. This straightforward repair meant the family could continue enjoying reliable hot water from their much-loved system.

Repair leaking TPR relief valve – Fairlight

Another customer, this time in Fairlight, noticed water leaking from their hot water system and feared the worst. After closer inspection, we discovered the TPR valve was the issue.

The purpose of the TPR valve

The TPR valve is designed to release excess temperature or pressure that builds up inside the tank. Without it, pressure could rise to dangerous levels, risking tank rupture. When this valve fails, water may leak continuously, leading to wasted energy, higher bills, and potential safety hazards.

Fixing a faulty TPR valve

We replaced the faulty valve on the spot with parts carried in our fully stocked service van. Within the hour, the system was back to operating safely and efficiently, saving the customer from further water wastage and stress.

Why water heater servicing is important

Both of these examples highlight the importance of maintenance. With proper care, a water heater can last decades. A professional service every five years can:

  • Keep your system running efficiently.
  • Identify worn parts before they fail.
  • Prevent costly breakdowns.
  • Extend the life of your hot water tank.

Simple DIY water heater checks you can do

Between professional services, you can keep your system in good shape with a few easy checks:

  • Look for leaks around the tank, valves, and pipes.
  • Test the TPR valve by gently lifting the lever to ensure it releases water and moves freely.
  • Monitor your hot water temperature for signs of inconsistent heating.
  • Clear weeds and debris from around the tank base to prevent rust.
  • Check for ants, which can sometimes interfere with electrical parts.
