Solar hot water system repair

Job: Replace faulty pump in Solahart Streamline hot water system

We recently helped a Northern Beaches customer whose Solahart Streamline solar hot water system had stopped delivering hot water. Our solar hot water expert, John, arrived promptly to assess the issue. After running diagnostic checks, he identified the problem – a faulty Rheem Salmson circulation pump. Fortunately, our fully stocked service vehicle had a replacement on board, and the system was operational again within the hour.

To ensure ongoing safety and compliance, John also replaced the TPR valve and carried out a full system check. No additional issues were found, so the customer can look forward to reliable hot water for years to come.

To improve efficiency and reduce the chance of running out of hot water during colder months, John recommended switching from Off-Peak 1 to Off-Peak 2 – offering longer access to cheaper power.

  • Attended site to investigate lack of hot water.
  • Carried out safety checks and isolated power supply.
  • Diagnosed and replaced faulty Rheem Salmson SB 04-15 240V circulation pump.
  • Replaced TPR valve (RMC 1000kpa) to meet Australian Standards.
  • Conducted a full performance check – no further issues found.
  • Recommissioned the system and left the site clean and tidy.
  • Discussed Off-Peak 2 benefits with the customer.

New electric water heater installation

Job: Replace a leaking Aquamax hot water system with a new Vulcan 315L water heater.

We were contacted by a customer in Mona Vale whose old electric water heater had started leaking.

Once onsite, we discovered the customer’s old Aquamax hot water system had developed a significant leak.  Upon inspection, unfortunately, it was beyond economical repair. Once a water heater develops a substantial leak, particularly from the tank itself, it cannot be effectively or safely repaired. These internal leaks often indicate corrosion or structural damage, which compromises the integrity of the tank and the unit’s performance.

To ensure the household had reliable hot water again, we installed a brand new Vulcan 315L electric hot water system in the same location. This high-capacity water heater is ideal for families and offers dependable, efficient performance. Some of the features are listed below:

  • 315L capacity: An excellent choice for medium to large households with high hot water usage.
  • Up to 9 users: Ideal for families of up to nine, based on average 7-minute showers in temperate conditions using mixed water at 42°C.
  • Warranty coverage: Backed by a 10-year warranty on the cylinder for peace of mind.
  • Heating element: Fitted with a single element and left-hand side plumbing connections.
  • Off-peak compatible: Designed to work with off-peak electricity tariffs to reduce energy costs.
  • Flexible installation: Suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation locations.

We were able to utilise much of the existing pipework, which reduced installation time and cost. However, to comply with current plumbing regulations and ensure safe delivery of hot water throughout the home, we installed a new tempering valve. This valve blends hot and cold water to deliver water at a safe temperature, helping to prevent scalding.

To further protect the new system and enhance its longevity, we placed pavers beneath the unit to elevate it slightly off the ground. This helps prevent potential damage from ground moisture, improves drainage, and reduces the risk of corrosion at the base of the water heater.

Switch from gas hot water to an economical heat pump.

Job: Disconnect instantaneous gas hot water and install a new, eco-friendly Rheem heat pump.

The homeowner in Manly Vale reached out to us looking for a smarter, more energy-efficient solution to replace their existing gas hot water system. With no other gas appliances in the home, they were paying unnecessary fixed gas supply charges just to keep the hot water running. By transitioning to an all-electric setup, they not only eliminated these ongoing gas tariffs, but also took a step towards reducing their household’s environmental footprint.

First, we discussed the options available to them – these included switching to solar hot water or a heat pump.  The customer opted for the heat pump option and we supplied and installed a new Rheem AmbiHeat Heat Pump Hot Water System (Model 551270).  This energy-efficient heat pumps can be offset with solar electricity, significantly lowering running costs.

  • Isolated and disconnected the existing gas system, capping off the main gas supply.
  • Drained and safely removed the old gas hot water system.
  • Supplied and installed the new Rheem AmbiHeat Heat Pump Hot Water System (Model 551270) with new concrete base to support the system.
  • Extended existing hot and cold pipework to suit the new system layout.
  • Installed compliant valves and plumbing as per AS3500 Plumbing Code.
  • Ran a dedicated electrical circuit to power the heat pump.
Why switch to a heat pump hot water system?

Heat pump water heaters are highly efficient, using up to 65% less electricity than traditional electric storage systems. They work by extracting heat from the air and using it to warm the water, much like a reverse-cycle air conditioner. This makes them a particularly smart option for homes with solar power, allowing you to heat water using free, renewable energy generated during the day. Environmentally, this switch drastically reduces carbon emissions, while economically it leads to lower energy bills over time.

By switching to the new heat pump, the customer now has complete freedom from gas.  They will enjoy lower energy bills and the satisfaction of a more sustainable home setup. If you’re in a similar position, get in touch. We’ll help you find the best hot water solution for your needs.

Tempering valve replacement

We recently helped a customer in Frenchs Forest who had been experiencing unreliable hot water. The shower would suddenly go cold, and it was taking too long for hot water to reach the taps. While tolerable in summer, it became a real issue as the weather cooled.

These symptoms often point to a faulty tempering valve – a vital part of your hot water system that regulates water temperature for safety and consistency. Once onsite, we inspected the customer’s Rheem Stellar gas water heater and confirmed the tempering valve had failed. Luckily, our service trucks are stocked with hundreds of replacement parts, so we replaced the valve on the spot.

While onsite, we ran diagnostic checks to ensure the rest of the system was working correctly. No further maintenance was needed. The new valve not only restored consistent hot water but also improved energy efficiency and reduced the risk of scalding.

What does a water heater tempering valve do?

The temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR valve) in a hot water system is an important and necessary safety feature with it’s main function being to release excess pressure and temperature from the water heater tank to prevent a catastrophic failure or explosion.

As water is heated, it expands, creating pressure within the tank. If the pressure inside the hot water tank becomes too high, the TPR valve automatically opens, releasing the excess pressure to the outside.

Additionally, if the water temperature inside the tank becomes too high, the TPR valve will also open to release the excess heat.

The TPR valve is typically located on the side or top of the water heater tank and is connected to a discharge pipe that runs to a drain or to the exterior of the building.

It is important to ensure that the TPR valve is properly installed and functioning correctly because, as indicated above, failure to do so can result in a dangerous situation.
